【語法】 (1) a) 通例 if 節には未来を表す will， would は用いないが， 動作主の主語の意志・習慣または相手に対する丁寧な依頼を表す場合は用いられる： If he will listen to me， I will help him. もし彼にぼくの言うことを聞く気があるなら助けてやろう / I should be grateful if you would ［will］ reply as soon as possible. すぐにご返事をいただければうれしく存じます《◆ would の方がより丁寧な感じを伴う》. b) if節が主節の動作の結果を表す場合には will を用いることがある： I will come if it will be of any use to you. お役に立つようでしたら参りましょう. (2) if節中ではしばしば省略が行なわれる： Come if (it is) necessary ［possible］. 必要なら［できれば］来てください. (3) 仮定法では if節と主節の述語動詞に仮定法動詞を用いるだけで， その中に組込まれた節中では直説法動詞を用いる： I would have seen you off at the airport if I had known when you were leaving ［would leave］. いつ出発するのか知っていれば空港でお見送りしたのですが.

《正式》もし…がなかったら， もし(人)がいなかったら《◆(1) 過去の事実と反対の仮定を表す. (2) 目的語に動名詞をとることもある》∥ If it hadn't been for the storm， we would have been in time. もしあらしでなかったら間に合っていただろうに(＝Without the storm， ...).

《正式》…という条件で， もし…ならば∥ He can go out on condition (that) he comes ［come， will come］ home by five. もし彼が5時までに帰宅するのなら出かけてもよい.

in case
